Barcelona in Depth

We spent today getting to know the city of Barcelona in depth.
Our guide this morning was Montserrat.  We began with a visit to the Dr Seuss-like Park Guell, a failed housing project designed by Antoni Gaudi that is now a fun park & tourist attraction.

From Park Guell we crossed the city's Eixample district to wind our way up Montjuic hill.  Here we saw some of the 1992 Olympic buildings, enjoyed views over the city & ocean, & joined in the Sardana, the Catalan 'national' dance!

Our next stop was the city's Barri Gotic, the medieval Gothic Quarter.  The small streets are home to the city's cathedral which we visited, seeing the beautiful interior & the courtyard-like cloister complete with guard geese!

Our final group visit was to the Church of the Holy Family, the Sagrada Familia, Antoni Gaudi's incredible & still unfinished masterpiece.  We toured the inside as a group, then separated to visit the museum before departing individually for a free afternoon of shopping, sightseeing, eating or sunbathing!

Our restaurant for this evening's dinner was in La Boqueria, the city market off Las Ramblas.  So we had an opportunity to wander through the market on our way to dinner.  No doubt many of us will be back when we have a full day to explore Barcelona on our last day.
